Diaper Cake

Diaper Cake

Diaper Cakes are great gifts for any expecting mother.  They are so easy to make and can be made to any theme or decor.  I also like that you can make one to four tiers depending on your preference or the number of diapers you have.  You can also customize with the baby’s name or theme decorations.  So, these cakes can be as simple or elaborate as you want, just use your imagination.

Many of the supplies can be found at regular stores, craft stores or online.  You can also purchase pre-cut letters or make them yourself on a cutting machine like Silhouette or Cricut.  I used a Silhouette machine.

I also like to place my diaper cake on a extra large craft box or hat box.  Then I fill the hat box with goodies for the baby.  Some ideas for the hat box are:  bottles, burp cloth, bibs, onesies, baby blankets, pacifiers, lotion, shampoo and clothes.

Supplies

  • White diapers – all in the same size or you can vary the sizes by tiers.  I was able to find white diapers on-line or at Walmart (Walmart’s brand).  So I like to use size 2 or 3, to make sure the baby does not grow out of the size diaper before using them.
  • 14 inch circle cake plate
  • 12-13 inch scalloped paper doily (optional)
  • Empty paper towel roll
  • 10 or 12 inch dowels – need at least 2
  • Multi-temperature glue gun and glue sticks
  • 1 package of rubber bands
  • Name cut out on glitter card stock – use a cutting machine like Cricut or Silhouette.  You can also buy die cut or chip board cutouts on line, or premade like on Etsy.
  • Curling ribbon or string
  • Ribbon – I used burlap, lace and pink
  • Storage hat box (optional)
  • Baby favors
  • Faux, burlap, or fabric flowers

For Mini Diaper Cakes

These mini diaper cakes use about 19 diapers.  You can make these to spell out the baby name and use as party decor.

Directions For Making A Diaper Cake

Diaper Cake

  • Roll each diaper and secure about 1/3 way down with a rubber band.  The first tier uses about 36-38 diapers.  This depends on the size you purchased.  So if you bought size 1, you may use up to 48 diapers.
  • Then stack them on the 14 inch cake circle around the the paper towel roll.
  • Next, secure the first tier with curling ribbon and then remove the rubber bands.  Then place on the cake plate with the doily.
  • Now, start on the next tier.  This tier should use between 17-19 diapers.  So, to keep your diapers from falling over, use the curling ribbon to make a loose loop.  I have also used large round cake pans or bowls to hold them in until I tie them.
  • Repeat the process until you make each tier. Third tier uses about 9-10 diapers.  The last tier uses about 7 diapers.
  • The first two tiers will stay together around the empty paper towel roll.  So once you assemble the first two tiers, place two three dowel rods in the second tier and then add the third and fourth tier.
  • Next, add the ribbon and secure with hot glue.  I added layers of ribbon for a more dramatic effect.
  • Then add the flowers and letters and secure with hot glue. So just be careful to glue on the ribbon and not the diapers or the recipient will be unable to use those diapers.
  • Feel free to add favors around the diaper cake.
  • You could add a book or stuffed animal at the top instead of the baby’s initial.
  • Now it is ready to give as a gift or even use as a centerpiece on a table.
