DIY Party Chip Bags

DIY Party Chip Bags

I recently discovered that DIY Party Chip Bags are pretty easy to make.  This is a great way to personalize a party.  Place these on the display table and the guests will be impressed with the presentation.   I wanted to get chip bags that would match a baby shower I was doing and could not find what I was looking for.  So, I decided to see if I could design the bag on my own.  I used Microsoft Word, but I probably could have used PowerPoint as well.

The first thing I had to do was save down transparent images I liked to my computer.  So I either purchased the images or they were free.  If you are going to make chip bags to sell, either design it yourself, or get permission of the image owner.  This is important because you can not reproduce images and sell products with the image, without rights or permission to do so.  All recommendations to print images on MajorGates are for personal use only, unless stated otherwise.

Another important thing to use is presentation(business) paper instead of regular paper.  It is a somewhat glossy paper that holds up well to stuffing the bag, printing and gluing.  So, only regular size chip bags will fit in the custom chip bag, larger bags will not work.  The standard 1 ounce chip bag that comes in most variety packs, works out perfect.

Directions For DIY Party Chip Bags

  • Start off by designing the chip bag in Microsoft Word or purchase a digital download off of Etsy.  Turn the page to landscape.  Then go to File ==>Print ==>Margins (change all the margins to zero).  Next add in transparent clipart.  You may have to format the image to “tight” or “behind text”.  So, you can do this by just clicking on the image.  Next, insert a text box and type whatever you like.  Then do an internet search and find a free barcode to insert on the bottom.  Insert another text box in the middle and type what ever you like, change the fonts, colors, etc.
  • Print out the chip bags on presentation/business paper.  This paper is a little glossy, gives it a professional feel, and easy to work with.

  • Next, cut off the space at the top and the bottom of the chip bags.

  • Then, trim off the extra space on the side of the paper (the side opposite of the Nutrition Facts).
  • Now, fold over the paper on the Nutrition Facts side.

  • Next glue up the center edge and secure the bag.

  • Then apply a thin line of glue at the top end of the bag and glue the top of the chip bag to seal.
  • Now, insert the chip bag into the chip bag cover by slowly working the chip bag in.  So make sure you are using only 1 ounce bags or they will not fit in the chip bag cover.

  • Afterwards, seal the bottom of the bag and you are done!  Repeat for as many party chip bags as you need.

  • So if you have a variety of party chip bags, make little labels, and cut them out with a 1-1 1/2 inch circle craft punch (depending on the size you printed).  Then, hot glue the label to the chip bag.  I printed the labels using a free program called PhotoScape X. I printed 6 rows x 5 columns for 30 per page.  They have a paid version, but so far, the free version works for my needs.  Here is the link, if you are looking for a program and I am not affiliated with them.  http://x.photoscape.org/

  • Then, attach the label to the chip bag.

  • Consider if you need to transport, making a decorative box.  Just take a standard box (I recycle ones that are delivered from Amazon), wrap it in wrapping paper, and decorate with cutouts.  Then you can just place the box on the display table.  Guests can just grab what they like, without bothering the host to ask what’s inside.
