Emergency Written Journal Tips

Starting and emergency written journal is important in case an emergency occurs and electronic devices are not working.  Today we rely on technology so much that we do not really know what we would do if it goes out for a long period of time.  I will share my tips of what you should have in a written home journal that you can easily reference or grab in case of an emergency.

Many things can happen to your cell phone such as it gets lost, damaged or will not hold a charge.  Electricity may be out for a while and there is no way to charge your phone.  There are many people with land lines that if you had key contact numbers, you could still handle business.  I will share my tips on what needs to be in your emergency home journal.

Key Phone Numbers To Have Written Down

Emergency Planning

 

You will be stressed enough during an emergency, the last thing you want to do is add more stress by researching companies and who to call.  Make sure you also have written down the account numbers and passwords for key accounts.  Know who you will call before an actual emergency.  You also may have neighbors or family that you may be able to help as well in an emergency.

  • Immediate Family and Close Friends
  • Doctors, Dentist and Eye Doctor
  • Local Pharmacy
  • Local Police and Fire Department
  • Home and Car Insurance Company
  • Roofer – research 3-4 reputable companies before an emergency.  Have an idea of their pricing and coverage they have.  Read reviews and ask for references
  • Plumber – at least 2 companies
  • Electrician – at least 2 companies
  • Tree Removal Company – find 3-4 companies locally
  • Windows Company – write down 2-3 companies that offer after hours assistance and service order policies
  • A/C and Heat – at least 3 companies
  • Utilities (gas, electricity, water, cable/internet) – you need this not only to contact about service but also service alerts/updates
  • Your bank (local branch and 800 number), Credit Card companies and attorney
  • Local emergency response (ex. 311 or other county numbers)
  • General Contractor – at least 2
  • Handyman – at least 2
  • Garbage company
  • Church
  • Local Shelter
  • Emergency Animal Shelter and Veterinarian
  • FEMA
  • Cell Phone company
  • Car Towing Service

These documents should be kept in a safe or fire retardant/water proof document holders. In case of emergency you should be able to just grab and go.

  • Birth Certificates
  • Marriage License
  • Social Security Cards
  • Important Family Photos – try to scan in old photos and save to a portable hard drive.  I also recommend sending a few flash drives to other members of your family with generational photos, so they are protected in cases of fire and floods.
  • Written Wills and any other important court documents with seals
  • Spreadsheet with important serial numbers and model numbers
  • Emergency Preparedness Checklist
  • Evacuation Checklist
  • Hurricane To-Do List or Tornado To-Do List
  • Flash Drives and/or hard drives with important documents and pictures

  • Household Passwords – all devices, cloud, security services/devices,etc.
  • Locks – combinations or passwords or the location of the keys
  • Filter sizes and types – company phone numbers, sizes or models – refrigerator, air, purifier, humidifier, water filtration, pool, etc.
