How To Flock A Christmas Tree
Flocked Christmas trees are beautiful and give that touch of winter on the inside of your home. Many people do not have a flocked Christmas tree since the tend to be expensive. You can turn any artificial tree into a flocked tree with flocking powder.
I do not recommend artificial snow sprays or other flocking methods that are not flame retardant. There are many homemade ways to flock a tree but you want safety first. They sell flocking powders in many sizes. For the average 7.5-9 foot Christmas Tree, you need about 10 pounds. I am not sure what stores sell the powder, so I purchased on-line.
You can use a unlit artificial tree to flock. Do not flock a live tree. You can flock an existing artificial tree you have or purchase a new one. So if you are purchasing a tree, make sure the artificial tree is unlit (no lights).
Flocking a tree is messy, so make sure you protect your surfaces and wear a dust mask. If you are sensitive to dust, you may find your allergies irritated after flocking a tree. If you flock over a dust cloth, clean up is simple.
Sealing the tree is essential to reduce the dust and shedding of flock from the tree. To seal the tree, you spray it with a mixture of glue and water. Once the tree is flocked and sealed, allow it to dry for at least 24 hours.

- 7.5 – 9 feet Artificial Christmas Tree
- Large plastic bag, leftover from a store run
- Drop Cloth – 9 ft x 12 ft
- Dust Mask – like N95
- Strainer/Sifter
- Flocking Powder – I bought the 25lb bag because I had to do a few wreaths as well
- Iridescent snow flakes (optional)
- Spray Bottle
- 24 ounces of Water
- Regular glue like Elmer’s white glue – need about 2 ounces
Directions For A Flocked Christmas Tree
- Prep the area with the drop cloth. If you are flocking the tree indoors, consider covering your furniture with sheets to protect from the dust.
- Then add the bag around the tree base to protect the tree base.
- Make sure you put on a dust mask before you start flocking.
- Spread out the branches of the tree. If the tree comes in sections, do not fully assemble. Start with the bottom section by fluffing out the branches. Flock that section before adding the next section.
- Start off by spraying the tree with the mixture of glue and water. Add 2 ounces of glue to the spray bottle and add 24 ounces of water. Then generously sift the flocking powder on the tree.
- Next, add the next section – fluff out the branches, spray and flock.
- Once you complete flocking the tree, spray again with the water/glue solution to seal the tree. Throw on Iridescent snow flakes if you like. They add a little shimmer to the tree.
- Let the tree seal and dry for at least 24 hours. Then it is time to decorate! We created Christmas at Hogwarts and made a Harry Potter inspired Christmas Tree. I made most of the ornaments. See my DIY section to learn how to make them. https://majorgates.com/category/do-it-yourself/
