Coffee Filter Backdrop

Coffee Filter Backdrop

The best part about making a coffee filter backdrop is that you can make this in any size!  Any space can be filled by just adding more or less flower coffee filters.  This is an economical way to make a lovely backdrop in white.  You can add embellishments or other decorations on top of the backdrop to really add personal touches.

So if you need a white background, and the walls are not white, try making a coffee filter backdrop.  It is time consuming if you have a large space to cover, but the backdrop can be recycled for another occasion.  I made the large sheets when watching TV in the evenings, so I did not really notice the time.  So anyone can have a white Christmas or white background in their space, regardless of the color of the walls!

Most backdrops are 10′ x 10′ or 12′ x 12′, but you may need to cover a larger space.  So measure out what you need, and get to gluing!  Coffee filters are available almost everywhere and are pretty cheap, so if you need more, just hop back to the store or order quickly on-line.

This type of background is perfect for many themes such as:  Winter Wonderland, Frozen, Wedding, baby shower, pictures or New Year’s.

Supplies

  • Regular coffee filters (8-12 cup)
  • white bulletin paper roll
  • Mini all-temperature glue gun with glue sticks
  • Scissors
  • Clear stick pins or command strips

Directions For Coffee Filter Backdrop

  • Measure the space you want to create the coffee filter backdrop for.  I preferred to work in small sections, but you could work directly on the wall after affixing the bulletin paper to the wall.  So since I worked on this in the evenings while watching TV, I cut the bulletin paper into 3-4 feet sections.  Don’t forget to protect your surface while working.  I used my craft mat over the table.
  • Start by separating a few coffee filters.  Heat your glue gun to low heat setting.
  • Then, gather the coffee filter by the bottom and make a rough stem at the end.  Open the filter back up and place a dab of hot glue in the middle and then re-gather.  The flower will hold together at this point.
  • So you can wear gloves, or be careful not to get hot glue on your skin.  Hot glue hurts really bad, so keep this in mind if you only have a single temperature glue gun.  I would wear gloves, just to be safe.

  • Work directly on the wall or on a table with cut bulletin paper sections.  Glue a dab of glue on the end of the stem.

  • Then attach the flower at the end of the bulletin board paper.  Start at the top of the wall or top of the cut section.  Then continue attaching flowers side-by-side, repeating rows.

  • Don’t worry about the backdrop bottom edge not being even as you work, you can correct any lineups at the bottom.  If the top edge is not flush with the ceiling, then line the top edge (starting point) evenly.  So it is the top and side edge that needs to be straight.  Everything in the middle can be adjusted by making smaller pieces.

  • Also, don’t forget to cut around any light switches or electrical plugs.  So remove the decorative plates and cut the coffee filter backdrop from around the outlet.  Be sure that no paper goes into the electrical box, or this could start a fire.  Next, re-attach the covers and it will look great.

  • Repeat adding coffee filters until the desired space is complete.  Then hang with clear stick pins or removable Command strips.
