Harry Potter Party Games

Harry Potter Party Games

If you are planning a Harry Potter Party, sometimes it is hard to think of the themed games to prevent downtime.  I often have a packed agenda, so that the flow of the party moves and everyone has a great time.  This post has some ideas for games that are fun for everyone.  Also, I recommend planning for more games than what you will need, just in case plans on that day change, such as the weather.  So have some games that can be done indoors if you need them.

Have a Tri-wizard tournament!  Divide your guests into Hogwarts house teams picked by the sorting hat.  Then the teams will play a series of games and win points for their house.  So you will need to have an agenda in order to have a successful tournament.  Make house badges for the kids, so they know which house they are playing for.  This is a great idea for anyone that does not come in a costume or themed shirt, so everyone feels included.

Also, plan to have a chalk board or dry erase board to help keep score.  I recommend keeping the scoring easy so that the totals are easy to finalize.

Explain the Tri-wizard Tournament Rules: (create some basic tournament rules)

    • Each child will be playing for their teams and some games the top individual will win an individual prize.
    • Each game will award points in the following order to the appropriate house.
      • 1st = 100          2nd = 75           3rd= 50             4th = 25
    • Top scorer with the fastest time or most points, will also win an individual prize on some games.
    • Not everyone has to participate in every game.
    • Have fun!

Harry Potter Party Game Ideas

Game 1 = Hagrid’s Ball Toss

Hagrids Ball Toss

Rules:  Place a long stick (like a broom handle) or cones for where the players must be behind, so that each ball counts.  So move the stick closer for younger kids, and farther back for larger kids/adults. Then have a parent or adult be the timer and another one to count the balls.

Score as many balls into the cups in 30 seconds.  Each ball is worth 1 point for your team.  Teams get 1 point for each ball.  Then the team with the most made balls, gets an additional 100 points and 2nd place 75 points, and so on.  You can decide if you want to hand out an individual prize for the person with the most balls made at the end of the tournament.

1st = 100          2nd = 75           3rd= 50             4th = 25

Game 2 = Ministry of Magic Mailboxes

Harry Potter Party Games

Click here for instructions on how to make the Ministry of Magic mailbox game:  https://majorgates.com/do-it-yourself/ministry-of-magic-mailbox-game/

Rules:  Place a long stick or cones for where the players must be behind to fly the Ministry of Magic memos.  Then the game host will yell out the points where the player gets the plane through the circle.  Specifically 100, 200, 500, 1000, etc.

I made the flying letters by finding a free template on the internet and printing on purple construction paper.  Then I cut out some Ministry of Magic seals that I found the image on the internet and printed on regular card stock.  Next, I painted the tips with metallic gold acrylic paint.

NOTE:  Any images you find on the internet are for personal use only.  If you plan to sell or reproduce items that you found on the internet, you must get permission of the image owner.  Sometimes they charge a fee, so get permission.

Flying Letters

Score as many planes as you can into the mailbox circles in 30 seconds.  So this game counts points as a whole to award, first, second, etc.  I would also hand out an individual prize for the person with the most points for the flying letters at the end of the tournament.

1st = 100          2nd = 75           3rd= 50             4th = 25

Game 3 = Quidditch

Quidditch

I made these hoops with hula hoops, PVC pipe and PVC connectors.  Then I spray painted them metallic gold.  I only had to push them into the ground.  For more details on how to make Quidditch hoops, click here:  https://majorgates.com/do-it-yourself/harry-potter-quidditch-hoops/

Quidditch

Rules:  Have two houses play at a time with a maximum of 8 players but reduce the number if you have a smaller space. Assign different point values to the goals or use the same point value. The goal is to get to 100 points first.

So the goal is to get the Quaffle (a gold rubber ball) into the goals by passing it from player to player and taking a shot.  To start, a coin toss or rock-paper-scissors determines who starts with the Quaffle.  All the players start at the same line with teams on opposite sides. No player can take more than three steps with the Quaffle or hold it longer than 3 seconds before it must be passed or shot.

4 red balls (these are Bludger balls) are placed on each end of the field with players only able to hold the red balls  for 5 seconds before they have to be passed to another person, shot at the player with the Quaffle ball or set down on the ground.  Defenders can only move 4 steps at a time as they try to get the Quaffle holder out. Players can place the red balls in the field for another team member to pick up, but they can only take 4 steps at a time to pick it up.  The only way to get the Quaffle holder out is to hit them with a Bludger ball while they are holding the Quaffle.  Team retains possession if they make a goal but everyone starts back at the starting line.

The Quaffle ball is in play when the kids try to move forward by passing to team members and throwing it through a hoop without getting hit by a Bludger ball.

Bludger balls can be picked up by any of the kids and thrown if they are not frozen. If a Bludger ball hits you, you have to freeze for 10 seconds and drop the Quaffle ball (if you have it).  Anyone else can pick up the Quaffle ball.  Anyone who is not frozen may pick up a Bludger ball and throw it at another player.

In addition, the snitch ball (a yellow tennis ball) is in play at all times, which may be released by an adult at any time randomly during the game.   Whatever team catches the snitch ball receives an extra 10 points.

The team that gets to a 100 points first or other point value you set, goes on to play in the championship.  Next the other team houses play.  Feel free to adjust the rules or make up your own.  Everyone tends to be laughing so much, just roll with the flow.  This is a great Harry Potter Party Game.

Game 4 = Shake Your Unicorn Tail

Unicorn Tail Game

Shake your tail for your team!  I made these from rectangular tissue boxes.  I made 4 boxes since two people from two different houses play at a time.  So I just wrapped the tissue boxes with Kraft wrapping paper, and then strung a ribbon through the bottom.  Then I filled it with 10 ping pong balls.  Next I widened the opening a little so the balls came out a little easier.

Harry Potter Party Games

Rules:  This is another funny Harry Potter party game.  Shake your unicorn tail to get all the balls out of the box in 30 seconds.  Record the number of balls that came out of the box.  Each ball gets 1 point.  So if the player gets at all the balls they get a bonus 5 points!

Unicorn Tail Game

Game 5 = Dragon Egg Race

Dragon Egg Race

Rules:  This is a relay race, where each house chooses 4-6 team members to race.  Get some rackets to carry the dragon eggs and race from one line to the other.   Players must balance the egg on the racket without dropping it and they can not touch the egg as they race.

If a team member drops their egg, they must freeze 3 seconds before proceeding.  Once they get to the opposite line, transfer the egg to your next team member.  You can choose to do one direction for each team member or they race down and come back.  I recommend if you have smaller kids participating, switch after they go one direction.

Which ever team wins the race, goes on to the championship.  Winning house wins 400 points!

Game 6 = Collect the Dragon Eggs

Harry Potter Party Games

Rules:  Using 2 chopsticks as wands, collect as many Dragon Eggs as you can in 60 seconds.  Use peanut filled M&M’s or Robin Eggs or other egg shaped candy.  But if you live in the South or it is a hot time of the year, keep indoors from the heat (away from kids), until you are ready to use.  Also, please find out if anyone has a nut allergy and don’t let any kids eat these without knowing they are okay to eat.

For this Harry Potter party game, all you need is a few cake plates, plastic cups or bowls, chop sticks and egg shaped candy.  This is a great game to give an individual prize.  I recommend at least 3 players from each house to participate.  Each egg collected is awarded 1 point.  House with the most points gets 100 points and so on.

1st = 100          2nd = 75           3rd= 50             4th = 25

Game 7 = Matching Harry Potter Patronus Game

Rules:  Individual game, where team members match as many Patronus’s as they can in 2 minutes or whoever finishes first.  If first finisher, ends before 2 minutes, the others can finish by the allotted time.  Winner is whomever has the most correct in 2 minutes.  First four finishers are awarded house points.  So you can also give an individual prize as well.

1st = 100          2nd = 75           3rd= 50             4th = 25

Game 8 = HP Trivia

Rules:  Answer as many trivia questions in 10 minutes.  Most correct answers wins.  Play as houses or for any tie-breakers.  Get trivia questions on line or from a book or game.  I got my questions and answers from cards, a book and game below, then I typed it up.  These also make great prizes too.

Game 9  = Ping Pong Quidditch

Ping Pong Quidditch

Rules:  Line up 10 red plastic cups on each side of a table.  Take turns bouncing ping pong balls from one end of the table, threw the Quidditch hoop and into a cup.  Turns should be for 1 minute each.  Made balls in the cup are worth 1 point.  Even number participants should be represented for each Hogwarts house.  Once every one has had a turn, then assign the wining team.

I made the Quidditch hoops stems from toy parts that I found at my local dollar store.  Afterwards, I realized I could have also used PVC pipe as well.  I then glued different size embroidery hoops to the stems.  Next, I glued them to a carboard paper circle.  Then I spray painted it all gold.

Everything was fine in the house, but after I brought them outside, the wind blew them over.  So I added some glass beads around the bases to weigh them down.  I could of probably glued them as well, but I did not want to mess up my cloth fitted tablecloth.  Use small buckets for the ping pong balls and have fun!

After The Tournament

Have a Tri-Wizard Award Ceremony!  Then hand out mini Trophy’s, Gringotts’s Gold (chocolate money candy, nuggets, etc.) and prizes.  I try to include prizes $20 or less for I can hand out more of them and it is affordable.  So see my suggestions below.  Update the mini trophies in different colors or labels for first, second, third and fourth.  Make sure all the kids leave with a favor bag too.

If you are planning on handing out wands, do so at the end of your party or event.  This is because kids like to sword fight or poke each other, so giving them out at the end, prevents them from breaking their wand or poking an eye out.
