Hagrid’s Ball Toss Game

Hagrid's Ball Toss Game

Hagrid’s Ball Toss Game is a game that kids as young as three can enjoy playing.  I created this game for a Harry Potter themed party.  The game is pretty easy to make and kids love it.  The game idea can be applied to any theme party.

Consider having a Tri-wizard tournament where you divide kids into their selected Hogwarts houses. Here is a picture of the Hogwarts House tags I made to distinguish the houses.  That way kids that do not have Harry Potter robes or Harry Potter shirts feel just as included as the other kids.

Harry Potter Party Planning

The game is made with black foam board and cups.  To play the Hagrid’s Ball Toss Game, toss as many ping pong balls into the cups for 30 seconds to earn points for their house.  Each player must remain behind the stick or field cones, for the ball to count once tossed.  Count the balls in the cups at the end of the 30 seconds and add to the score for their Hogwarts house.  Have someone monitor the toss, another person to count the balls and someone else to take score of  games.  This also gets the adults involved.

At the end we handed the winning house mini trophies as they were awarded the Tri-wizard cup.  Everyone should leave with something!

Supplies

Some of these supplies you can find at your local craft store or party supply store but if you do not have time to venture out, I have included links to purchase on-line.

  • Foam Board (20 x 30 inch)
  • Paper or Plastic Cups – I used these cups as favors and a left over Harry  Potter cup for the center of the Hagrid’s Toss Game.  The black polka dot cups were cups that I used for the party theme.
  • All temperature mini glue gun and all temperature glue sticks
  • Glue Sticks
  • White Card Stock (65 lb)
  • Free Harry Potter font – Do a web search for free fonts and download what you like
  • Scissors
  • Printer
  • Ping Pong Balls
  • Cauldron or bucket (10-12 inch)
  • 4-6 Foot stick or PVC pipe – you can use a closet pole, broom handle, bamboo stick, piñata stock, or pipe.  So look around your garage and see what you have lying around.
  • Yard Stakes (you can also find these at a local hardware store)

Instructions for Hagrid’s Ball Toss Game

Hagrid's Ball Toss Game

  • Perform an internet search and download a free Harry Potter font.
  • Print out the letters on white card stock.  I printed 2 letters per sheet.  Then hand cut out each letter.
  • Print out the point cards on card stock.  So create a table with 2 columns and 3 rows and enter the font numbers in a large font size.

Numbers

  • Cut out the numbers and glue to the foam board with a glue stick.
  • Then hot glue the cups to the foam board.
  • You can either use the glue gun to glue on the letters or use a glue stick.  I like to use a glue stick even though it takes longer because the letters are applied smooth.  Using the hot glue gun will make the letters bumpy but if you are in a rush, this may be the best option.
  • Last, hot glue on two yard sticks, they should be spaced apart about 3 inches from the edge.  When placing the sign in the grass,  take another yard stick and pre-hammer it into the grass and then remove the yard stick.  Then repeat for the other side and then the sign will go easily into the ground.
  • Place the ping pong balls in the cauldron or bucket and you are ready to play Hagrid’s Ball Toss Game!  You can move the long pole close for smaller kids and farther back for bigger kids.
