Supplies

  • Various size glass jars and bottles – reuse daily jars and bottles that are rinsed and saved.  It took me about a month the save all the types I wanted.  I used hot sauce bottles, pasta jars, gravy jars, BBQ sauce bottles and various bottles from my local dollar store.  Make sure you keep the lids.
  • Various type fillers to represent the potion you are creating.  This includes: glitter in corn syrup, glitter with Mop n Glo/Polycrylic, water gel beads, air freshener gel beads, potpourri, decorative floral gems, water with food coloring, white or grey feathers, fake greenery, and decorative sand.  Most of the fillers I found at the local dollar store, but there are plenty of choices on Amazon.
  • Mod Podge
  • Various size corks
  • Twine and Ribbon
  • Mini Multi-Temp Glue Gun and glue sticks
  • Glitter ( various: used extra-fine, fine to regular)  – the fine glitters work best
  • Decorative Jewelry Embellishments (you can also find these types of embellishments at the local craft store).  Harry Potter wine bottle charms will work as well.
  • Food Coloring
  • Craft Syringe or Small Funnel
  • Mop & Glo – Regular in blue bottle or Polycrylic Water Based Gloss
  • Water
  • Vegetable Oil
  • Corn Syrup
  • White Regular 65-67 lb 8 ½ x 11 Card Stock
  • Color Printer
  • Scissors
  • Paper Towels
  • 2 oz – Acrylic Paint (White, various Browns, and Antique Gold) – I think metallics work the best
  • Artist Paint Brush and Mini Paint Tray

Instructions For Harry Potter Potion Bottles

Halloween Potion Bottle Labels

For some of the bottles Harry Potter embellishments, I found an old Harry Potter “Scene It” game and used the game pieces,  the rest I found on clearance at my local craft store.

  • Wash with dish liquid, all bottles, jars, lids, caps and let completely dry.
  • Determine the labels you want to make. Do a search on the internet for potion labels or Harry Potter labels and save to your computer.

Note:  Any images you find on the internet and print are meant for personal use only.  You can not reproduce these labels for sale without the permission of the image owner.  If you wish to sell items, you must locate the image owner and get permission and pay any required fees.  All my posts where I recommend internet images are for personal use only.

  • Print the Harry Potter Potion Bottle labels or other labels 4-6 per page on white card stock and cut out.  I use a free photo software that I am not affiliated with named PhotoScape.  They have a paid option but the free one works for me so far.  So if you are interested, here is the link. http://www.photoscape.org/ps/main/index.php
  • Determine what you want on the inside of the potion bottles.  I used glitter in corn syrup, glitter with Mop n Glo, water beads, air freshener gel beads, potpourri, decorative floral gems, water with food coloring, white feathers, fake greenery, and decorative sand.  Most of the fillers I found at the local dollar store.

Decorating Tips

Potion Bottle Supplies

To make a bottle appear to have content inside when it is empty, pour some of the Mop & Glo or polycyclic inside of the bottle (about 2 Tablespoons) and swivel it around to coat the entire bottle.  Pour out the liquid and pour the glitter inside of the bottle and swivel around until the bottle is coated.  Let dry without cap for at least 48 hours

Another idea is to mix the glitter with corn syrup for a thick potion inside the bottle, pour corn syrup inside the bottle at least half way or more.  Add about 1 Tablespoon of glitter or mica powder and mix with a skewer stick.  Add more corn syrup to fill and add another Tablespoon of glitter and mix with skewer until well mixed. Hot glue on lid or cork.  The bottle can be decorated now.Harry Potter Potion Bottles

  • Paint the lids of the bottles with the brown, gold, black acrylic paint by sponging it on or unevenly painting it on.  Then allow to completely dry.
  • Once potion bottles and lids are dry, add the contents.
  • Seal the potion bottles with hot glue.  Hot glue the lids on because guests get curious and try to open the bottles which could end up with a messy glittery spill.
  • Distress some of the bottles with white, grey, bronze, or black acrylic paint. So this will depend if you are trying to achieve an aged look on the bottle.
