Harry Potter Wand Boxes
When planning, I always try to have the most creative and fun parties but I do not like to spend a lot of money. So I try to make as much as I can. I also like to create things that have a great decorating impact that bring unforgettable memories to my guests. Therefore to keep with the theme, I wanted my guests to have Harry Potter wands but I was not about to spend $15-$35 buying everyone one. I also did not want to give out the super cheap looking ones you can usually buy in bulk, so this meant I had to make them. Once I made the Harry Potter Wands, I also wanted the kids to have their own Harry Potter Wand box as well.

Harry Potter wand boxes give guests the extra experience of selecting their own number box and feeling like they just picked out their box from Ollivander’s. Each kid can select their own wand and box so when they went home, they not only all the memories from the party but could do imaginary play for hours on end. In addition, for the favor bags, I sent home a spell book and wand pencil that I made.

These Harry Potter Wand boxes fit handmade wands that are 15 -16.5 inches. So the wand boxes are 17 inches long x 1.25 inches high x 3.25 inches wide.
Supplies For Harry Potter Wand Boxes
- Poster Board in colors: White, Black, Navy Blue, Gold, Hunter Green – I purchased the black and white posters from my local dollar store and the Navy Blue, Gold, Brown and Hunter Green from my local craft store. But if you can’t find them (since I have noticed a shortage lately), see some links below. Also, you can make 4 wand box tops per poster board and 5 wand box bottoms per poster board. So, for 20 wand boxes you would need 5 solid color poster boards and 4 white poster boards. I would buy at least 1 extra poster board in white, and another color, in case you make any mistakes and to make the templates.
- White regular 65-67 lb Card Stock to print box labels and end cap box labels
- Batting – 100% Polyester Batting (less than 1/2 – 1/4 ” thick)
- Ruler
- Pens: black pen and silver gel pen
- Bone folder paper crafting tool
- Scissors
- Masking Tape
- Dual Temperature Mini Hot Glue Gun and mini glue sticks
- Regular Glue Sticks
- Craft Cutting Mat or surface that can get messed up
Directions For Harry Potter Wand Boxes
- Create templates for the top and bottom of the box.
- Top of the Harry Potter Wand box – measure from the edge of the poster board 5.75 inches and make a mark. Then measure the length of the poster to 19.5 inches and mark with your pen. I used an extended ruler to do this or you can use the markings on your cutting mat. Cut out your rectangle.
- With a regular ruler, use the body of the ruler to trace the inside template edge.
- Write top template in the center.
-
- Bottom of the Harry Potter Wand box – measure from the edge of the poster board 5.5 inches and make a mark. Then measure the length of the poster to 19 inches and mark. I used an extended ruler to do this or you can use the markings on your cutting mat. Cut out your rectangle.
- With a regular ruler, use the body of the ruler to trace the inside template edge.
- Write bottom template in the center.
- Get a poster board and trace your Top Template four times and cut them out.
- Trace your inside edges with the ruler.
-
- Cut off the four corners.
- With the bone folding crafting tool, trace with the tool along the lines and then fold your wand box.
- Cut small pieces of masking tape 1-1.5 inches long and secure each corner of the box.
- With your hot glue gun on low temperature, glue the inside corners of the box.
- Once the glue is dry, slowly remove the masking tape. So I only did this on the top of the box, the bottom of the wand box I decided the leave the masking tape on.
- Make a template for your batting from the left over poster board. It should be 16.5 inches x 3 inches. Next, label your template. Then cut out your batting and put it into the wand box.
- Search the internet for the Ollivander’s label you like. I printed on white card stock 6 labels per sheet. I hand cut out each label, used a glue stick and stuck on the center of the box.
- Search the internet for blank Harry Potter wand box number images. Then I downloaded a couple of free Harry Potter fonts and typed in various numbers. You have to save each image once you type the number so you can print multiple wand box numbers on a piece of card stock so you do not waste card stock. I was able to print 20 wand box end numbers per page. Then you have to print the number twice if you want the box number on each end of the box. I hand cut out each label, used a glue stick and stuck a number label on each end of the box. By having wand box numbers you do not have to worry about putting names on the boxes and the look is more polished for pictures and impact.
Note: Remember that any images you copy from the internet are meant for personal use and not for resale. So, if you plan to sell anything from images you downloaded, you must get permission from the owner.
For the party, I stacked all the Harry Potter wand boxes on a decorated table. Because of all the things I have to do in a day, this effort took me about a week to do in the evenings. I worked on the wand boxes for about an hour or two per evening for a week. Therefore, I made 40 wand boxes. My kids wanted some and some of my adult friends wanted some too. So, my estimated cost per Harry Potter wand box was about a $1.25 per box.
In addition, I already had: cutting mat, bone folding crafting tool, glue gun, regular glue stick, card stock, scissors, gel pen, ruler and black pen.
