Mermaid Party Ideas
There are plenty of options available for party decorations for a Mermaid Party. Â In this post, I will share my Mermaid Party Ideas to make your party memorable. Â Building memories is important for any party or event, so how you make the party unique takes planning and imagination. Â I tend to buy some things premade and then make some things to make the party truly unique. Â Transforming the space to something amazing will have every spectator in awe.
When planning a party, the initial things you need to do is set the date and time of the party and then order or design the invitation. Â Invitations can be different than the end result of your party decorations, so don’t worry about ordering an invitation and matching accessories to start. Â You will need to determine if you will be mailing the invitation, sending an email or text link. Â Your guests will be in awe of the party decorations and focal points. Â Next, start planning the decorations, entertainment, menu, games, prizes, pictures, and fun!

Mermaid Party Ideas
There are so many fun decorations that you can buy or make for the mermaid theme. Â Here are some of my ideas for the perfect party, so get inspired for decorating the best party!
Main Mermaid Party Decoration Ideas
- Balloon Kits – These create great focal points and to surround the main focal table or as backdrops. Â I like how you can add to balloon kits with signs, additional balloons, flowers, seaweed, coral, etc. Â Guests immediately notice this focal point.
- Paper Lantern Jellyfish – Create paper lantern jellyfish! Â These are pretty easy to make with paper lanterns and plastic tablecloths. Â There are other ways to make these too, just search on the internet. Â You can also purchase the pre-made kind.
- Table Decorations – Consider how to decorate the guest of honor table, cake table, gifts table and the guests table. Â You may also have a table for a candy bar, food bar or other special station. Â I also like a “guess” or “special note to the guest of honor” table. Â Table cloths can be plastic, vinyl or cloth. Â Just consider where you are having the party. Â If it is outside by a pool, I would stick with plastic. Â You will need table covers, table shirts, and possibly table runners. Â Also, don’t forget the table centerpieces. Â You can buy the pre-made ones or make more elaborate centerpieces with ocean themed items and shells. Â You can take utensils and stick them in a candle stick for a great dinglehopper centerpiece. Â The one below is painted gold and then decorated with white beads, white pearls as bubbles, and shells.
- Serve-ware – There are many options for the Mermaid theme. Â You can go with theme specific plates, cups and napkins or do a blend for a more elegant look. Â So consider incorporating some solids, so that the theme is not overdone. Â Maybe have solid color plates and cups with patterned napkins. Â You can also use the extra plates for additional events.
- Decorate With Mermaid Tails – You can request them on cakes and cupcakes as toppers, make mermaid tail chocolates or soaps in molds, make large cutouts of tails, or make lollipops and cookies.
- Get Mermaid Themed Items so everyone goes home with something. Â So don’t forget the items for the favor bags. Â I recommend a mix of toys, candy, chips and drinks. Â Put a couple of tattoos and stickers in the treat bag. Â Also, consider mermaid themed bubbles or make custom labels for the bubbles. Â You will be able to find so many cute items for favor bags.
- Decorate With Variations Of Color: Â Mermaid colors tend to include blue, teal, aqua, soft green, violet and dark pink. Â So I recommend picking 4 colors to tie everything together and consider accenting with pearlized white, gold, and silver for this theme.
- Large Clam Shells – So you can decorate the walls with large clam shell cutouts that you can make or buy. Â Also, the best part is that you don’t have to be a good artist to pull off making a giant seashell. Â Another idea would be to use inflatables that you can also use for the pool later. Â Guests can take a mermaid picture on the inflatable too!
Mermaid Crafts Party Ideas
- Mermaid Wands – Make with starfish shells or card stock cutouts and attach on a dowel, large chop stick or skewer. Â This is a fun craft for the kids to do at the party. Â So kids can add more to the mermaid wands with glitter, gems, mini shells and stones.
- If the party is co-ed, for the boys, they can make tridents to decorate. Â To make these, trace out the top of the fork (trident) onto heavy card stork and then hot glue on to a wooden dowel. Â You could then spray paint the whole thing and then allow the kids to decorate with paint, glitter, gems and shells. Â Also, getting a few large tridents to decorate the party would be great.
- Mermaid Crowns – Crowns are usually made with head bands and can be made with seashells, flat backed gem stones, glitter, ribbon, pearls, etc. Â This is another craft where the kids can make their own. Â I recommend starting the crowns with the larger shells so the kids have a starting point. Â Then allow them to paint the shells if they like, add smaller shells, glitter, gems to make it their own design.
- Make Mermaid Bracelets – This is another great craft to do at the party. Â But just make sure the guests are old enough that they won’t put the beads in their mouth. Â So give advance warning to guests coming with smaller children.
- Make A Mermaid Necklace. Â Like the bracelets, this is a great party activity. Â These are sold in kits and it is fun for the kids to pick the center charm themselves and then add additional beads or charms to make it their own. Â This craft can also be the favor for the party.
- Mermaid Scales Painted Rocks – Get large rocks or stones and have a demonstration stone on how to do the scales. Â These can be written or a looping video. Â A parent volunteer can also help with this craft. Â Start by painting the stone with metallic painting and allow to dry for 20-30 minutes (depending on humidity). Â Then draw on the scales with a permanent marker. Â It is done unless you want to add glitter or tiny gems. Â To add glitter, coat with a layer of mod podge and then sprinkle with glitter.
- DIY Shell Hair Pins and Mermaid Shell Hair Combs – This is one of my favorite ideas. Â Get blank hair combs or hair pins and decorate with shells, flat backed charms and gems. Â Secure them to the comb with hot glue or thick fast bonding glue (like Gorilla).
Mermaid Entertainment Ideas
- Have A Pool Party! Â Pool parties can be held indoors and outdoors. Â You can even get mermaid tails for the party. Â Consider getting a few for guests to try on and take pictures around the pool or in front of a backdrop. Â I also found cool mermaid dive toys. Â If you are having a party at any pool, make sure you have a couple of life guards present for safety.
Face Painting – Kids love getting their face painted in mermaid colors! Â So consider hiring a face painter for the party.
- Play Some Games! Â A scavenger hunt is so fun. Â I recommend indoor and outdoor games in case of rain. Â Word scramble, ocean themed trivia, ocean baby names, bingo, Pictionary, etc are great games. Â Guessing games are great for all age guests, along with ball toss and relays. Â I also like simple minute-to-win-it games. Â The important thing is to keep the guests entertained. Â I usually create an agenda for all my parties that has a general length of time of each activity, so that the flow of the party is continuous and dead time is minimal. Â Guests of all ages really appreciate this because moving smoothly from one thing to another is what people remember. Â Don’t be surprised if guests tell you it is the best party they have ever been to because of the flow of activities.
- Temporary Tattoos – Adults and kids like temporary tattoos in the mermaid theme. Â They are easy to put on and take off.
- Hit A Piñata – Pack a piñata with toys and candy and let your guests have fun.  If you have a lot of kids, this activity can take 20-30 minutes, so consider that in your planning.  Also, don’t forget the favor bags for gathering the candy, the blindfold, rope and hitting stick.
- Photo Booth and Photo Props – Consider renting a 360 degree Photo Booth or Selfie Station. Â These are so much fun! Â For a more budget friendly idea, create a photo backdrop and have photo prompts for adults and kids to take pictures. Â Also, have a QR code or upload location for guests to upload their photos.
Have fun planning, create a party agenda, relax and have fun!
