New Years Jeopardy Game
This New Years Jeopardy Game was so fun to make! It was interesting tracking down the traditions and history behind New Years. This is another jeopardy that I have added to my series. This game is so much fun to play with family and friends. It also travels well in the car and can be used more than once. All you have to do is print the numbers again and place a single piece of tape to hold it in place. The game host just lifts the number off when a team makes a selection.
New Years Jeopardy is a great game to play leading up to midnight. It is especially great for families that have come together to ring in the New Year. In my experience, the teams can get pretty competitive and it is so funny to watch. Even though I do not provide a prize, people just like the bragging rights. So follow my directions below or make up your own rules. The key is to have fun. Once you play this game once, you will get requests to play it every year. That is how I got to creating the post and making the download bundle.

Directions For New Year’s Jeopardy Game
- Start by looking for New Year’s facts, traditions, history and trivia or you can purchase my download that has it all (at the top of this post). If you are going to look for the questions and answers yourself, copy or type them into a document.
- Then once you capture the New Year’s information (you will need 6 questions for each topic), organize them into 5 main topics.
- On the Q&A sheet you are creating, assign point values for each question. I use: 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500. So it is easier to type the questions into the table if you print out the Q&A sheet first.
- Next, type the questions into a 2 x2 table that the squares are approximately 4 1/2 x 3 1/2 inches. I used MS Word but there are many alternatives, such as Google docs, etc. Therefore you can either print as you go, or type them all first and then print.
- Then type the headers or main topics and print. So, I like to use a different font to give it some contrast.
- Afterwards, type over the questions in a large font with the numbers: 200, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1500. You will need six of each number, and the squares need to be 4 3/4 x 3 1/2 inches or a little larger to cover the questions. Then print out the numbers.
- Now, cut out all of the questions in the tables, the headers, title, and numbers. It is okay to cut the questions smaller that the outline, you may end up trimming them smaller if you need more room on the project board.
- Next, add the bulletin board border to the project board with hot glue. So, if you are adding additional cutouts to the border, add them now. I strongly recommend doing a dry fit before glueing the cutouts. I added New Year’s Eve hats and champagne bottles. I found the images on the internet and saved them to my computer. Then I printed 12 to a page with a free software called PhotoScapeX. Here is the link if you are looking for a free program and I am not affiliated with them. http://x.photoscape.org/
NOTE: Saving and using images from the internet are for personal use only. If you plan to sell items with the images that you found, you must locate the image owner and get permission and they may charge a fee. Major Gates only recommends images on blog posts for personal use only.
Assembling The New Year’s Jeopardy Board
- This is the most import thing. Do a dry fit of ALL the questions before starting to glue them. That way, you can accurately see the spacing and make sure you have room to get everything on the project board. So you should start at at the bottom and work your way up dry fitting each item. The headers and title should be the last things that are glued. As you dry fit the items, make sure you don’t place an item over the project board seams.
- When gluing the questions to the board, feel free to trim them smaller to ensure the numbers fit over them.
- Now, start at the bottom gluing the questions with a glue stick and NOT hot glue. You need to be able to position them and hot glue will not allow you to move it around for a few seconds.
- Then with one piece of clear/transparent tape, tape only the top of the number. They should be easy to pull off by the game host.
- Last, add the headers and the title. These can be attached with a glue stick or hot glue. For an added touch, I added a glitter card stock background with the main header in black and the topic headers in blue.
Game Play Instructions
Start by dividing your guests into two or three teams. Two teams work best. Let each team choose their own team names. Then each team chooses a team captain or speaker that will answer for the team. Several people will yell out answers, but the only one that counts, comes from the team captain. So, the order goes by the team captains choosing a number and the host writes down a number and whoever gets the closest goes first and the second closest next. The team captain does all the choosing and answering for their team, but input comes from the entire team. They are the spokesperson. So, if the answer does not come from the team captain, it does not count. Everyone is constantly yelling out, so this is very important.
You will also need a chalk board, clip board, or dry erase board to keep score. How you assign points can vary. You can go through the trouble of subtracting points, or my preferred way is to just allow the other team to guess if one team guesses wrong. If the opposing team, gets it right, they get the points. The opposing team retains their turn whether they get it right or wrong. Then they choose a new question and if they get it right, they continue picking questions until they miss. This is the easiest way to take score if you don’t want to do a bunch of math at your gathering.
So, if a team guesses wrong, give the other team(s) a chance to steal (whatever team captain raises their hand first) but if they guess wrong, they are not penalized with points either but can gain points and retains their turn. I only give the stealing team 30 seconds to converse, and the team captain must provide an answer or neither team gets the points, and they just choose another question.
The controlling team continues to choose questions until they miss one. They have 60 seconds to converse and provide an answer for each question. Whoever has the most points at the end wins New Years Jeopardy. Then take a group picture of the winning team with the score board.
