Playing Card Ornaments
Playing card ornaments are another fun ornament or decoration to make. This a great ornament/decoration to make with the kids helping too. The supplies list is pretty small and easy to find. So you can make these ornaments as small, or large as you like. I made these ornaments for my Christmas tree this year since the theme is Alice In Wonderland.
These playing card decorations can also be made for birthdays, weddings, bridal showers or any event that requires playing card decorations. So just don’t put the ornament string on the back. Also, these would make great table numbers for an Alice In Wonderland themed wedding. Just add the table number to the front.
Also, look around for different playing card faces. You can find large playing cards on-line as well, or find the images on-line and print them in the size of your choice. Just do an internet search, and you will be amazed at the fun images people have created for playing cards. Whatever the size you decide to print your images, is the size wood you will need for the back support. You can find the wood plaques or bases on-line or at many local craft stores. I shopped for the wood plaques first, and then adjusted my printing to fit the image. So gather your supplies and let’s get started!

Directions For Playing Card Ornaments
- For this ornament, you can use pre-printed playing cards or find images on the internet of playing card faces that will match your party theme. You can also purchase designs from digital artists. For my example in this post, I purchased these images on Etsy.
NOTE: Images found on the internet are for personal use only. If you intend to sell products made with the exact image, you must get permission from the image owner and they may charge a fee. So either use free images or create your own if you plan to sell what you make. If you purchase cards and make ornaments, you can sell those with no issue.
- To start, I found Alice In Wonderland playing card images on Etsy that I liked, and purchased them. Then I printed 2 per page to fit the size of the wood shape. So the images printed were 4″ x 6″ on white regular 65 lb card stock. The wood shape is 5″ x 7″ rectangle.
- Print and cut out the image you want to use.
- Then sand any nicks or wood edges on the wood plaque.
- Next, paint the back of the wood plaque and allow to dry completely (about 1 hour).
- Then paint the front side, but you don’t have to paint the middle completely since the image will go over it.
- Now, apply Mod Podge to the back side of the image, and affix to the wood plaque/shape and allow to dry.
- Then apply Mod Podge to the front to seal the image and allow to dry.
- Next, blend the card image with the trim paint with a sponge brush. So use a trim paint with similar colors to the colors on the card face. Allow to dry for 1 hour.
- Then apply Mod Podge around the trim and shake on the glitter. Do this step over Kraft paper for easy clean up. Then allow to dry for 1-2 hours.
- So when drying, put playing card ornaments on something they will not stick to, like candlestick holders, plastic cups, or mini vases. Do not dry these on paper or they may stick to the paper.
- Last, apply the ribbon to the back with hot glue. So remember that these can be used as other decor as well, just leave off the ribbon. These are great to stick in greenery, table centerpieces, accent decorations and other decorating ideas. Just use your imagination!
