Restore Metal Outdoor Furniture
It is easy to restore metal outdoor furniture and protect it from future damage. The most important thing to do for metal outdoor furniture is to make sure it is not rusting. Rust is the enemy of metal, so as long as you can stop the rusting, the furniture will last for endless years. I decided to restore some chairs I have had for over 17 years and they turned out great. So I was so inspired, I decided to restore metal plant stands, tables and metal outdoor decorations.
This project was pretty easy, you just need to protect the ground from the over spray and buy enough spray paint for the job. I am sure these chairs can last another 17 years. Don’t forget to get new stoppers for the legs to complete the look.

Directions To Restore Metal Outdoor Furniture
- Protect surfaces outdoors that you will be painting over. Spray paint has quite of an over spray, so make sure you cover a large area. You can also use a large cardboard box to help with the overspray.
- Next, wash down the furniture well with a mixture of 1/4 cup of dish liquid and 1 gallon of warm water.
- It is important that you remove all dirt, grime and rust. So the best way to clean metal is with steel wool and a wire metal brush. I like to use a coarse steel wool when I have a lot of rust to remove.
- Next, rinse off all the soap and grime with cold water. Then allow the furniture to dry completely. So this should be about an hour.
- Then start with the furniture upside down. I like to start with the furniture upside down in case there are any drips and I get the hang of spraying. The underside will catch any mistakes until you get a nice even spray. So you may want to invest in a spray can tool to make sure you get an even spray. If you are not using a spray can tool, make sure you wear gloves. This is waterproof paint and it is difficult to get off your hands and nails if it gets on it. Goo Gone will get if off your hands if you have some.
- Shake the can and apply the rust reformer per directions, making sure you are holding it the correct distance from the metal furniture. So make sure you really spray in the joints and corners to prevent rust for occurring.
- Allow to dry for 2 hours before flipping over and then spray the rust reformer on the upright side. Then allow to dry for 24 hours or overnight at minimum.
- Now apply your color for paint. So start with the furniture upside down again, and let it dry for at least 2 hours before flipping over to paint the upright side.
- So once it is done, allow to dry for 24 hours before using.
- Then, replace any missing stoppers by gently tapping with a mallet.
- Also, consider retouching metal planters, metal garden art, etc. or anything rusting outside that needs to be refreshed. Enjoy your beautiful Restored Metal Outdoor Furniture!
