Small Outdoor Kitchen Planning

Small Outdoor Kitchen Planning

Before you get started with small outdoor kitchen planning, you have to have a sort of idea of what you want.  Spend some time outdoors thinking through what you need and what you want.  Determine what the space will be used for and the placement of things.  Then decide if you will take on some of the work yourself or hire a contractor.

Next, do some research on how much things cost, so you have an idea of prices when you request estimates.  You should get at least three estimates from licensed contractors before you decide on a contractor.  So talk to friends and family and see if they recommend anyone.  Also consider if you will need HOA approval.  The best part of this investment in your home, is that it will increase your property value.

There are some key points to consider when building a small outdoor kitchen such as:

  • Use of space
  • Budget
  • Materials
  • Time of year for build

Use Of Space For Outdoor Kitchen

Determining how you will use your outdoor space is essential for getting what you want and need.  On a nice day or evening, go outside and envision your space with a notebook.  Write down everything that you must have, and things that would be nice to have.

Do you need to be able to wash your hands frequently or wash out flower pots?  Maybe you like to grill chicken, fish and vegetables, more than beef.  So do you need a smoker or gas/propane grill?  Does your family enjoy making pizzas?  Determine if you need more flooring and what you would like it to look like.

When considering your space, notice where you have shade or need shade.  Determine if your property drains properly on normal rainy days and bad weather events.  If you live in a cold area, what protections will you need and how could you still enjoy the space in the winter?

Budget For Small Outdoor Kitchen Planning

Outdoor kitchens start around $3,000 and can go up to $100,000, depending on what you get.  The average cost of a full outdoor kitchen with all the appliances ranges on average from $15,000 – $25,000.  The costs go up if you extend your patio roof or add a pergola.  So it is very important that you take the time to think about what you want, how you will use the space and how often.  Consider the budget for the following:

  • Property Improvements

    • Running gas, electrical and water lines
    • Drainage

Weather and The Time of Year to Build

Make sure you consider the time of year that you want to take on the project.  Small outdoor kitchen planning is still a big project, even if your space is small.  Work will be slower during the rainy season or if it is cold.  So try to pick a time of the year when the weather is the most mild.  This will allow for curing and drying times to be optimal.  Think through the following:

  • Season
  • Holidays
  • Planned Major Events or Travel Plans
