Under The Sea Party Ideas
One of my favorite party themes is Under The Sea! This is a wonderful theme for people of all ages. There are plenty of options available for party decorations and games but making the decorations and backdrops are so much fun. I tend to buy some things premade and then make some things to make the party truly unique. I love seeing the transformation of the space to something amazing will have every spectator in awe. So in this post, I will be sharing some party ideas that may work with your vision of the perfect under the sea party. To create the ocean waves backdrop, I twisted two colors of streamer over a dark blue plastic backdrop. Then I secured at the top and bottom with clear push pins.

When planning a party, the initial things you need to do is set the date and time of the party and then order or design the invitation. Invitations can be different than the end result of your party decorations, so don’t worry about ordering an invitation and matching accessories to start. You will need to determine if you will be mailing the invitation, sending an email or text link. Your guests will be in awe of the party decorations and focal points. Next, start planning the decorations, entertainment, menu, games, prizes, pictures, and fun!

Ocean Under The Sea Party Ideas
So, the first thing to do is to determine your color palette. What will be your main background color? Will you want the background to be deep blue, ocean blue, teal, etc. So determine if you will want to decorate the floor and how you will have things that mimic the ocean floor. For example, sand, coral, seaweed, shells. Envision the space and take measurements before you shop or order things on-line. This is really important if you are going to have a photo wall. So if you are having the party at a venue or someone else’s home, request to take some measurements and pictures of the space. Know the size of the wall(s) you plan to decorate and know how you will secure to the walls without damaging. You could also make a temporary background stand with PVC pipes.
- Decorate with creatures from the sea: octopus, fish, sharks, jellyfish, seahorses, starfish, whales and dolphins. These can be inflatables, cutouts, stuffed animals, or paper mache. So cutouts for shells and starfish are pretty easy to make. All you need is poster board and no great artistry skills are required. You can also add paint, glitter, sand, and gems for more detail. In addition, consider using large paper pom poms half way opened and placed on the floor to mimic ocean plants and flora. I also love inflatables because you can use them at the pool later. Another idea is just to blow up balloons and have on the floor to represent bubbles.
- Some color suggestions include variations of: Blue, teal. aqua, soft green, violet and dark pink. So as your colors come together, make sure to add some contrast and accent colors. Try not to overdue one pattern in the theme. The more variation that you incorporate, the more the guests have things to uncover and be amazed. Also, try some cool accent colors like silver, gold, white, and colors that are pearlized or metallic. Clear decor that resembles bubbles is also really cool.
I used leis to decorate the chandelier to mimic underwater flora.
- So consider what you can make to cover walls or to make backdrops. I like to make large seaweed and corals made from poster boards, then decorate with paint and glitter. Streamers and balloon kits also add to the space. Many party planners offer great designs for balloons and backdrops, so see what is is available locally. They are pretty easy to assemble as well, so you can always make your own. You just need time and space to blow up tons of balloons. This is a definitely a day before activity with help. I twisted streamer up all the walls in the spaces that guests would visit to mimic plants on the ocean floor and secured with clear stick pins.
- Remember that under the sea party themes are to help the beholder visualize life under the water. So try to make your guests feel like they are under the sea attending your party. Another great thing to help decorate with is netting. So consider other colors of netting. The netting can be in white, brown, black, blue or green, etc. You can also accent the netting with lights, cutouts, and shells.
Under The Sea Food and Table Settings
How you display the food, sweets, treats and favors is important. Guests love the details that go into a party. Get creative and come up with fun names for things that are ocean themed. For this party, I contrasted colors and patterns, so that things did not get lost with just one pattern. I recommend getting some matching things and then contrast with solid colors too.
Another great Under The Sea Party Ideas is to come up with ocean themed food labels, like: shark bait, trident tacos, shells and cheese, fish bait, submarine sandwiches, oyster crackers, oyster eggs, siren sandwiches, etc.
I also recommend typing a menu. This allows guests to see the options for what they would like to try. If something contains nuts, eggs, or other common food allergies, list that on the menu. People with food allergies will know what to avoid by reading the menu. In the picture below, I used brown sugar for editable sand and you can also use crushed graham crackers. You can also use large paper pom pom’s as ocean flowers.

Favors
When planning the party, don’t forget the favor bags. Under The Sea Party Ideas for favor bags are unlimited. I usually make custom favor bags for my guests. Knowing that no one else has a bag like this is so satisfying. I like to mix downloaded labels with card stock and glitter paper. Craft circle punches are often used to add further dimension.
Great things to go into the favor bags are fun glasses, bubbles, tattoos, water or juice bottles, slime, keychains, candy, ocean themes soap, pencils, erasers, notepads, ocean toys and squirters, chips, gummies, rice crispy treats and snack bars.
Under The Sea Party Ideas For Entertainment
When planning a great party, you have to consider how you are going to entertain your guests. I love to play games but you can also entertain with other things. Try to have things to entertain guests of all ages. Have things for the little ones and stuff for the adults. Also, consider games where people have to engage with people they don’t know so that everyone feels engaged and included. It is important to have a party agenda. Have a general agenda for how long things should last and the order of events to reduce dead time. Guests love a good flowing party. Don’t be surprised if you have the best party they have been to just because you followed an agenda. You catch so many things that are missing, when creating the agenda.
