Crispy Cod Fish
This crispy cod fish recipe is similar to the classic pub fish that is crispy on the outside and light and flaky on the inside. Crispy cod fish is great with French fries or potato wedges. It will also taste great on top of a salad or inside a sandwich. Try this in fish tacos as well.
The secret to crispy fish is in the batter and the proper heating of the oil. So make sure you pay attention to the temperature of the oil and it is between 360-380 degrees Fahrenheit. Also, do not overcook the fish or it will be tough on the inside or absorb too much oil.

Ingredients
- 2-3 pounds of cod fillets
- Juice from 1 lemon
- 3/4 cup of all purpose flour
- 3/4 cup of wheat flour
- 2 teaspoons of cornstarch
- 1/4 teaspoon of baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon of baking powder
- 2 teaspoons of salt
- 2 teaspoons of sugar
- 1 teaspoon of onion powder or granulated onion
- 2 Tablespoons of olive oil
- 1 teaspoon of garlic powder or granulated garlic
- 1 teaspoon of coarse black pepper
- 2 1/2 cups of water
- 2 large eggs
- 2-3 cups of oil (for frying)
Supplies
- Large bowl
- Whisk
- Large frying pan
- Tongs
- Plate
- Paper towels
Directions For Crispy Cod Fish
- Rinse off the fish and then cut into large pieces (about 3 1/2 to 4 inches long). Then set to the side on a plate or bowl.
- Next, season the fish with the lemon juice, olive oil, pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
- Combine all dry ingredients in a large bowl and whisk.
- Then add in the eggs and water and whisk until well combined.
- Now, pre-heat a large frying pan with vegetable oil to 360 degrees Fahrenheit. The amount of oil depends on the size pan you use. So the oil should be about 1 inch deep in the pan. It is important that the oil is heated to deep fry, or the fish will be soggy.
- Next, dip the fish into the batter until fully coated and place into the hot frying pan.
- Cook until golden brown on each side (about 3-4 minutes on each side).
- Then drain on paper towels and serve.
- You can make these crispy fried cod fish as the main dish, on sandwiches, or on fish tacos.
