Snow Crab Legs With Garlic Butter

Snow Crab Legs

Many people do not make snow crab legs because they do not know how to eat it or how to select crab clusters in the store.   I will share my tips for both.  Snow crab legs have a sweet delicate taste to the meat.  It tastes even better when dipped in a melted butter garlic sauce.

Eating crabs can be messy and getting to the meat can be challenging.  I recommend getting a few sets of seafood tools, so that you can enjoy eating snow crab all year long.

Snow crabs can be a little pricey, so we only get these a few times a year as a treat and around the holidays.  I use the same recipe whether I am making snow crabs or Dungeness crabs.

When shopping for crab legs, purchase 2 clusters per adult.  Small kids can only eat one if they will try it all.  We like to make crabs the day before trash day because the shells smell like seafood and when the next day is trash day, it gets whisked away.

When selecting snow crab legs in the store, look for bright colored snow crabs with all the legs and claws.  Don’t be shy in asking for the best ones you see.  Even if the snow crab legs are thawed when you purchase them, they can be refrozen one more time before cooking them.  In fact, they weigh less if you buy them thawed which is better for costs.

Directions For Snow Crab Legs

Snow carb legs can be thawed or frozen before cooking.  So you do not have to thaw them out before cooking.  Crab legs that you buy in the grocery store are already flash steamed before you purchase.  You are only cooking in flavors to enhance the taste.

  • Fill a large stock with water until it is about 4 inches from the top.  The pot should be large enough to hold 6 long snow crab leg clusters.
  • Add all the seasonings and stir.  Then turn on stove to high heat and heat until boiling.

Crab Boil

  • Rinse off the Snow crab legs whether thawed or frozen and add to the boiling water.  I like to cook them frozen.
  • Once you add the crab, the water is not boiling anymore so you have to return to a boil.

Crab Legs

  • Cover the pot and leave the lid slightly vented so it does not spill over while boiling.  Cook on high heat for 8 minutes only.  So set a timer so that you do not overcook.

  • Turn off the heat after 8 minutes.  The crabs are ready.  They will develop deeper flavor if they sit in the pot with the stove off for another 5 minutes.
  • Now make your garlic sauce.  In a microwave safe bowl, add a stick of butter but slice it in smaller sections.  Then add the 3 teaspoons of dried chives and 1 teaspoon of garlic powder or granulated garlic.  Microwave for 30 seconds and stir, then microwave another 15 seconds or until butter is melted.  Be careful not to over microwave or the sauce will be oily instead of creamy.  This also tastes great with whipped butter as well.  Pour into smaller bowls for serving.

  • Most people eat 2 Snow Crab Clusters if served with sides.  So this recipe feeds 3 people.

How To Eat Snow Crab Legs

Snow Crab Legs

The best way to eat snow crab legs is with seafood tools.  That way you can easily access the meat inside the hard shells.  Carb crackers, picks and seafood scissors make this a breeze so you can enjoy your crab.  Use the crab crackers on the claws.  Use the scissors and cut the long side of the legs, then use the pick to pick out the meat.  Don’t forget to pull the meat out of the joints.

Snow crab legs can store in the fridge for a up to 3 days in a sealed container. To re-heat in the microwave, cover and heat for 2 minutes 30 seconds and eat.

Sides that go great with snow crab legs are corn on the cob, baked potatoes and homemade French fries.
