Harry Potter Party Planning
When planning a Harry Potter Party, you will find there is not much out there to buy to make your party unique. The reason it is hard to find Harry Potter party supplies is due to the licensing around Harry Potter. You will be able to find plates, napkins, cups and balloons but other things are hard to find. So to plan a Harry Potter party that is unique and special, you will find you have to use your imagination and make most of the things. I will share my ideas for planning a great Harry Potter party.

Tips For Planning A Harry Potter Party
Get creative in the spaces you are decorating when planning for a Harry Potter party. Fill up spaces with backdrops and banners. I made the great hall with teacher craft rolls, black cardstock, photos I found on-line and picture frames from my local dollar store. I affixed the pictures to the brick backdrop with double-sided tape. This look was affordable and dramatic. It also served as a great wall to take pictures.
Create an Owlry on another wall. We used this wall as the backdrop for the table that held the favor bags. To learn how to make custom Harry Potter Favor Bags, click here: https://majorgates.com/do-it-yourself/harry-potter-favor-bags/
Another affordable decorating tip when planning a Harry Potter party is to make things that cause a dramatic impact such as flying letters, flying keys, Owl Post packages and backdrops.
Make a photo wall for your guests to make wonderful memories. This is an easy and affordable way to decorate and be interactive with your guests.
I made custom wand boxes and wands and set them up in Ollivander’s. Each child received a number and when there number was called, the kids selected their wand and wand box. We did this towards the end of the party so that kids did not end up sword fighting with the wands or poking each other.

Create Honey Dukes when planning a Harry Potter party! This was a fun project. I purchased candy on sale and then made Harry Potter themed candy labels to top each bag.

Outside Games When Planning A Harry Potter Party
Don’t forget about the outside! You need to have something for your guests to do. Plan games for the guests with Harry Potter themed prizes. We had a Tri-wizard tournament where we divided the kids into their selected houses. Here are the Hogwarts House tags I made to distinguish the houses.
I made a sorting hat and bought a sorting hat toy that when you pushed the button said a name of a Hogwarts house. I hid it behind the kids, placed the hat on their head and pushed the button. They really thought the hat was talking, great fun! The kids wore their house tag on their shirts.
Have someone to take score of the games. At the end we handed the winning house mini trophies as they were awarded the Tri-wizard cup. Everyone should leave with something, so that is another reason to leave the wand selection to the end. The kids get a great favor bag and select a wand with wand box. They will have a great time.
Here are some of the things that I did….
I decorated the fences with plastic Harry Potter plastic table cloths. I attached printouts of book covers on one and banner flags on another.
A quidditch match was set up for the kids to play in teams. I made the quidditch hoops with hula hoops, PVC pipe and gold spray paint.
The kids could also play ping, pong quidditch. It was set up with red solo cups and hoops that are made from dollar store toys, embroidery hoops and gold spray paint.
We had the most fun playing a Flying Letters game where the kids had to try to fly Ministry of Magic letters through the circles for points for their house.
Harry Potter Party Games for All Ages
Another fun game was Hagrid’s Toss that I made with black foam board and cups. Each kid had 30 seconds to toss as many ping pong balls into the cups for points for their house. They had to remain behind the cones for the ball to count.

For the little ones, I made Tic-Tac-Toe on the concrete with pumpkins and owls and a bean tossing game. I had Harry Potter coloring sheets for them to color.
