Harry Potter Wands
My family are huge Harry Potter fans, so when my twins wanted a Harry Potter birthday party I was happy. I thought I would just be able to order everything on-line and quickly found out I was wrong. Harry Potter birthday supplies are hard to come by, especially bulk Harry Potter wands. I then started to panic since I already said yes to this theme. We had not had a birthday party in a few years, so I decided to make it happen. With this decision meant that I had to then make almost everything.

When I went to research getting Harry Potter wands for the kids, I had 2 choices, plastic wands that were reasonably priced but were not good for 11 year old’s or paying $14 each for a wand made of resin. Since neither of these options were going to work, I knew I had to make them. I looked at images on-line to get my own inspiration and ended up with the result I am sharing in this post.
My research led me to make wands made of clay or glue. I decided to combine them and see what happens. There are some lovely all clay wands out there but they are very time consuming and I needed to make at least 40. I needed forty not just for the kids at the party but a couple for my kids and the adults that wanted one as being Harry Potter Fans themselves.
So let me share how I made these…

Instructions
There are a few types of wands that I made.  So I will explain how I made each type. When you purchase your chop sticks for the Harry Potter Wands, make sure they are the cooking chop sticks which are longer than regular chop sticks. Also, make sure you have a large surface to work on that you do not mind getting damaged or dirty.  So I used a large cutting mat, and covered it with craft brown paper or sometimes I use a white poster board that I get from my local dollar store.
Get a cutting mat to protect your surfaces.
Hot Glue Type Wands
For Hot Glue Type Wands, they are wands made with hot glue only.  So if you have a multi-temp hot glue gun, put the setting on low to reduce the chance of really burning yourself as the hot glue may drip from the chop stick. Randomly go around chop stick towards the top with hot glue.  Then hold the glue gun and twist the chop stick into a random twisted vine pattern.  Then let the glue cool and build up in areas that you want to be the handle.
Example on a pencil. See my post on wand pencils to see how to make wand pencils.  https://majorgates.com/do-it-yourself/harry-potter-wand-pencils/
Marble/Glass Bead Wands
Create a dramatic difference with the Harry Potter wands, add a marble or glass bead to the top of the wand. To secure the bead, place a dab of hot glue at the top of the wand and place the marble or glass. Allow to cool before proceeding.  Then secure marble/bead further with more hot glue.  So if you will be adding clay, you may do so, after the hot glue dries. If you are creating a Harry Potter wand with more hot glue, keep twisting the wand as you add more glue to desired shape and design of wand.
Clay Wands
To make a Harry Potter wand with the air dry modeling clay, work in very small amounts of clay because it becomes more difficult to work with the more it is exposed to air.  So take out a small amount and seal bag immediately, to further protect, place in a quart zipper bag.  Then shape onto the chop stick to make the handle and use your fingers to create indention’s. I used a tracer pen to make the holes in the Dumbledore type wands. There is no wrong way to make your design, the possibilities are endless.
Hot Glue and Clay Combo Wands
You can combine the techniques of hot glue and air dry modeling clay for a Harry Potter wand. Other than securing a gem, apply the clay parts first and allow them to completely dry overnight.  Then add accents with lines with the hot glue and allow to dry.
Painting and Sealing the Harry Potter Wands
Next is painting the wands with acrylic paint.  So paint the wands stem first. The bottoms dry faster and are easier to fix any blemishes later. Once the stems dry, then paint the top of the wands. Mix up colors and be creative. The Harry Potter wands will look great!
To seal the wands, spray with clear coat spray paint and allow to dry. The wands are now ready for your event or home use.
