Crafting Must Haves

Crafting must haves are the tools and supplies you will need to do many paper crafting projects.  Some ideas include making your own birthday banners, invitations, water bottle labels, scrap booking, treat bags, food labels, menus, cupcake toppers, etc.  The possibilities are endless when crafting.  I save hundreds of dollars for every event that I plan buy doing a bulk of the work myself.  The only thing you need is time to plan and make the items.  With these crafting must haves, you can customize any party or event that the guests will not have seen before.

  • Mini dual temperature glue gun with mini dual temperature glue sticks.  The reason I prefer to use a dual temperature glue gun is because you can adjust the heat to hi or low.  Many projects do not need the hi setting and nothing is worse then getting a hot glue burn.  To start, purchase a dual-temperature mini glue gun.  That way you can use for small projects as well as large ones.  I use my mini glue gun for 90% of projects.  The larger glue guns are used for larger projects such as making a wreath or gluing Christmas lights to brick or stone.

  • A good set of sharp scissors is also essential.  2-3 different sizes (at least one that is small) are great for all types of projects.
  • Investing in a cutting mat is another crafting must have.  You need a cutting mat so that you do not damage your home furnishings and counters.  I prefer Fiskars because it is self healing and has the markings very clear for measuring.  I have several mats but I recommend size 24 x 36 to start with but 12 x 18 is a good size if you are limited on space.
  • Craft punches are another great investment.  Expert crafter’s have machine cutters such as Silhouette Cameo or Cricut but many of the same end products can be made with craft punches and a firm hand with scissors.  Make sure you enjoy crafting before investing in cutting machines.  The sizes of craft punches I recommend are:
    • Circle – 1.5″ – 2″
    • Scallop (medium) – 1 3/4″
    • Scallop (large) – 2″
    • Hershey Kisses Label size – 3/4″

  • A bone folding tool is great for folding paper, making creases, scoring, making cut lines and making paper flowers.  This is the tool to use to make wonderful paper flowers.

  • Crafting Glues – Depending on the craft project, it is important that the right glue is used.  I mostly use Mod Podge, E6000, glue sticks  and glue adhesive.
  • Craft Syringe – Use this to distribute E6000 glue or other craft glues.  I like to use craft syringes when applying gems or making small lines of glue on projects.
  • The last primary crafting must have is a craft precision knife.  You use this tool on the cutting mat when cutting paper, cardstock, foam, felt, etc.

Secondary Crafting Must Haves

  • Large dual temperature glue gun with dual temperature glue sticks.  The larger gun is used for larger projects.
  • Regular Glue Sticks – it is more cost effective to buy in bulk.  Use glue sticks for crafts, scrap booking and back to school supplies.  Make sure you buy glue sticks that dry clear, washable, acid free and non-toxic.
  • Standard Scoring Board – use this tool to score paper before cutting.   The more crafting you do, the more you find this tool is a crafting must have.
  • White Card Stock – this is a crafting must have for many projects  8 1/2 x 11- 65 lb regular while card stock can be used for unlimited projects.
  • Colored Card Stock – this could include glittered or textured
  • Ruler – use rulers for measuring and straight edges
  • A good color printer that prints photos as well is a great tool to have.  So a color printer allows you to print images for your projects, menus, invitations and photos.
